Get an n8n workflow failed notification by email

Need an n8n workflow failed notification you can trust? An n8n workflow can break without anyone noticing. A trigger stops firing, a credential expires, or the error workflow you set up gets switched off. Nothing tells you until a client asks why their leads stopped.

Workflow Pings from Radar My Business watches your n8n workflows from the outside. Your workflow pings us when it finishes. If a failure ping comes in, or the expected run never shows up, we send you one email.

What you get

  • A success ping URL and a failure ping URL for each workflow. GET and POST both work.
  • An expected run interval and a grace period that you set, so a late run isn't flagged too early.
  • Working, running late or stopped shown next to the time of the last check-in. Paused monitors show as Paused.
  • One email alert when a run is missed or a failure ping arrives. No pile of repeat emails during the same outage.
  • One recovery email when the next success ping comes in.
  • Optional n8n API check. Add your public n8n URL, workflow ID and API key, and the daily check also reads your recent successful and failed executions. Private hosts are refused and your key is stored encrypted.

How to set up an n8n workflow failed notification

  1. Step 01

Add a monitor. In Radar My Business, open Workflow Pings, choose n8n, and set how often the workflow should run plus a grace period.

  2. Step 02

Copy your two links. You get a success ping URL and a failure ping URL.

  3. Step 03

Add a success ping at the end of your workflow. Add an HTTP Request node:

    • Method: POST
    • URL: your success ping URL (https://radarmybusiness.com/api/agent-monitor/ping/<your-token>)
  4. Step 04

Add a failure ping to your error workflow. In the error workflow, add another HTTP Request node:

    • Method: POST
    • URL: your failure ping URL (https://radarmybusiness.com/api/agent-monitor/ping/<your-token>/fail)
  5. Step 05

Run it once. The monitor shows Working with the time of the last check-in.

Optional: send the item count and a response snippet

A run that finishes with nothing to show is caught too. If the success ping reports count 0, or its message or snippet contains words like unauthorized, forbidden, invalid token, expired, rate limit or error, the monitor goes down and you get one email. In the success HTTP Request node, turn on Send Body, choose JSON and Using JSON, and paste this expression:

{{ JSON.stringify({ count: $items().length, snippet: JSON.stringify($json).slice(0, 500) }) }}

A GET ping can use the query string instead, for example …/ping/<your-token>?count=0. The next clean success ping sends one recovery email. You can also set your own minimum item count and extra words on the monitor.

Why a ping catches what n8n's error workflow misses

n8n's Error Trigger only runs when a workflow starts and then errors. It can't tell you about a workflow that never ran, and it does nothing if the error workflow is off. A success ping flips that around: if the ping doesn't arrive inside your interval and grace period, the run counts as missed.

Failure pings alert right away. Missed runs are checked once a day at 14:10 UTC (7:10 AM Pacific), so this is a daily safety net for silent failures, not a minute-by-minute pager.

FAQ

How do I get alerted when an n8n workflow fails?

Add an HTTP Request node to your n8n error workflow that POSTs to your Workflow Pings failure ping URL. When the failure ping arrives, you get an email right away.

Will I know if a workflow stops running completely?

Yes. Set an expected run interval and grace period. If no success ping arrives in that window, the monitor is marked running late, then stopped, and you get one email. Missed runs are checked once a day at 14:10 UTC (7:10 AM Pacific).

Do I need to install an n8n community node?

No. Setup uses n8n's built-in HTTP Request node. There's no separate node to install.

Where do alerts go?

Email. You get one email when something goes wrong and one when it recovers. Email is the only alert channel right now.

Does it work with Make and Zapier too?

Yes. The same ping links work with a Make HTTP module and Webhooks by Zapier. For Make and Zapier, monitoring is ping-only.

What does it cost?

Workflow Pings is included in every Radar My Business plan: Starter ($29/month, 5 monitors), Pro ($79/month, 25 monitors) and Agency ($199/month, 100 monitors), or $279, $759 or $1,990 a year (Agency yearly is 2 months free). The 7-day free trial is on monthly Starter, with no card. Pro and Agency are paid plans.
